Our Story

Sovereign Grace Baptist Church sanctuary

It all began in 1991 when God brought together a small group of people who were concerned for a friend and Pastor who was in a time of transition from ministry to a time of searching for God’s direction for his future.

These people met weekly for prayer to discern God’s will regarding whether or not Pastor Thomas Smith was to begin a new local work. Shortly thereafter it was determined that God was indeed calling Pastor Tom to begin that new work in Phillipsburg, NJ.

The church had a humble beginning with a handful of people meeting for the first time at the local Howard Johnson hotel Memorial Day weekend in May of 1992 under the name of Sovereign Grace Bible Chapel. It wasn’t long until the church became indoctrinated as Sovereign Grace Baptist Church and it’s first official members were welcomed in 1993.

After outgrowing the small conference room at Howard Johnson, the church moved across the river to a larger conference room at the Best Western, Easton, PA. Though there were times when the Lord tested the faith of this small congregation, for instance, by the hotel having overbooked the conference room one Sunday, causing the church to meet in the bar of the hotel, God continued to show Himself faithful by weekly providing a hotel room that could be used for a nursery, and even allowing the hotel pool to be used for a baptismal service. During this time the faithful members of this body began meeting at different homes that were made available by various families in the church to meet for prayer every Wednesday evening.

The church moved to one more hotel in NJ before settling at the current location of Firth and Hudson Streets in Phillipsburg, NJ in 1998. In the year 2000, the church began it’s Sunday School program where the church’s next generation continues to have the opportunity to learn valuable biblical principals through Bible stories and songs.

In 2003 the church purchased land in the neighboring community of Lopatcong township for a building program.

As the Lord directed this small church in the past He will direct in the future.
